About

Alpha was founded by Tad Merryman and Ben Lanier and is the first academy that focuses on the complete development of jiu jitsu students.  We offer classes beginning for students as young as 4 years old and spanning every age group into adulthood.  We offer youth classes for students 6-12 years of age at different skill levels (fundamentals and advanced) to provide students with the foundation they need to succeed and offering curriculum that will continue to challenge them as they grow up in the sport.  For students aged 13-17, we offer a teen focused class bridging the gap that offers more advanced teaching for students to prepare them for the adult program.  The adult program continues to educate students in the constantly evolving sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and challenges them each and every class physically and mentally.  Review our schedule of class offerings and our class descriptions.

Our Instructors are the best in the area and dedicated to giving the best instruction available.

We are also in the early stages of harnessing technology to aid in the retention of BJJ. We are working with developers to create an app specifically catered to the needs of a BJJ student.

Student discipline and respect are essential to our academy.  Students will be taught to lead by example and learn accountability in addition to technical knowledge of BJJ as they progress through their belt promotions.

Alpha Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a proud affiliate of Abmar Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu.

What’s in a Name?

Alpha is defined as “something that is first” or “beginning“.  Alpha Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the first BJJ gym to heavily focus on the beginning of young jiu-jitsu athletes development.  We are pioneering a technological approach to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  While building leaders on and off the mat.

This is the first gym of its kind, with a focus on developing from a young age and using new techniques for learning, making Alpha the perfect name for our academy.

History of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

In the early 1900s, Japanese Judo made its way to Brazil. Whereas Judo consisted primarily of throws and takedowns, it also incorporated some ground fighting and submission holds. Certain Brazilians who learned Judo at this time realized the effectiveness of this type of ground fighting and invented new techniques that focused on this particular aspect. Thus Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was born.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was soon recognized as a very effective form of self-defense. By closing distance, taking an opponent to the ground, using leverage, and applying chokes and joint locks, one could defend himself or herself against a larger or stronger opponent. This martial art is thus considered one of the best forms of self-defense. Knowing BJJ is even a necessity for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitors.

BJJ is relatively new compared to more popular martial arts. As a result, BJJ is still rapidly growing, developing, and evolving. Each year we see new techniques being utilized at the highest level of competition.
